TIVA is the acronym for Total IntraVenous Anaesthesia; as the name implies, it encompasses any anaesthetic event that is maintained exclusively via intravenous agents.
The most common (and UK licensed) agents for use in dogs and cats are alfaxalone and propofol, although significant care must be observed regarding the latter in cats, as prolonged use may lead to detrimental effects. In addition, the chosen propofol formulation may a have a hard limit of cumulative dose, resulting in a finite length of procedure time.
To better understand the approach to anaesthesia maintenance by TIVA, a working understanding of pharmacokinetics is very desirable.
